We always get frightened by the idea of Sisyphean tasks - seemingly endless and futile actions that we keep doing but it never gets done. Just thinking of rolling an immense boulder up in vain tired our mind and that fear even threatens us to act in the first place. Nevertheless, not only Camus Albert’s idea of resistance against faith that it provides a possible solution, we can never ignore that there are different experiences during the Sisyphean tasks: American psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck pointed out two attitudes - fixed mindset and growth mindset. People who have a relatively growth mindset choose to believe that their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others); and rather than merely focus on the outcome, there are so much one can learn and experience during the process.
The artist picked rocks on different days in the mountains during the residency and threw those rocks down into the hill. There are intangible developments that one cannot see through these actions: strength improvement, better sense of direction, faster walking speed, more endurance and so on.
Not all the rocks remain the same after rolling down, there is a rock that broke into pieces. If Sisyphus do cheated Death for his immorality, eventually he would finish his task as all rocks on earth would be broken into tiny pieces upon his continuous actions.
