A song called “Angel’s Gift” from a Canto pop singer Eason Chan talks about the life of lower-middle working class. They take care many others’ life but in return, who does really care about them. To some extent it inspired me for this artwork.
Somehow variable items are always being protected safely whenever they are placed in public areas: bicycles, carts are all locked in the fences as owners afraid these stuffs are being stolen. One item draws my attention so much are those cardboard boxes that being carefully packed and collected by different parties, mainly elderly and those living in poverty.
Cardboard boxes mean little to many people. These boxes become rubbish once you finish unpacking the goods. However to many others, these are variable items used for exchanging money, for sustaining the life and to some extent, for saving our environment by recycling papers. When you realize that there is one-seven population in Hong Kong living in poverty, you can imagine how important these items mean to them.
This artwork aims to express my gratitude to these hard working people.
