knowledge and value

It is always interesting to obverse how important the role of “knowledge” plays to the value of objects that we encounter everyday. Culture affects our perception on what is useful, important, valuable etc as across different society and norms.

To tackle this idea, the value of Chinese medical herbs has been employed. To many of us, a bunch of Chinese medical herbs means nothing but just a group of tedious grass. It does not mean to depreciate the value of herbs but ironically, it is just the matter of whether you know the value of this item or not.

The artwork is presented as a performance show. The stage floor is full of leaves and grass. Model A swept these leaves into a crowd. Model B came out, walked around the stage and wisely picked up some leaves and grass. She backed to her seat, tore those leaves into small pieces and put them into a glass, brewed them into a drink. The smell of Chinese herbal drink remain audience that she got the knowledge to find out valuable items from a group of mess, whereas for those who do not obtain this knowledge (as presented by Model A), he just treat those grass as rubbish.

marks and disappear

Items do disappears without being noticed in our daily life normally, unless you pay particular attention towards them, like water droplet on window, cut recovery in your finger etc, but what if we can record the disappear of marks? Also what if it is related most directly to us?

Thus the idea of this artwork is about the disappearance of marks in body. Some playful marks are being drawn on body. Some of the marks are drawn by ball-pens, some by marker-pens and some by water-pens.

The fade out of inks are in different tempo. Artist keeps bathing as normal everyday and sees how the marks fade out. The marks recorded the traces of physical activities artist perform everyday, which the whole process last for five days. Some marks disappear faster and some remain on body even few days later.

innocent beast

Body hairs remain our animal side. We shave, cover, and “rearrange” our body hairs so as to make ourselves look different from wild animals, as well as to show that we are civilized. Just take a look at the overwhelmed advertisement for hair-removal treatments and you can discover that body hairs undoubtedly become a sign of nastiness to our social norms.

However we do accept cute hairy rabbit. It seems that we almost forget rabbit’s lustful nature. Thus I would like to recall this by putting my body hairs toward it.

Instead of playing inside the Ocean Park, we believe that it is more important to just be with your friends and find a nice day, then playing everywhere is equally joyful and allow more possibilities in having varies fun!
