Double Decker – a project by Sandwich, Bucharest – is based on an Open Call for artists from Romania, China and Moldova, of any age or background, launched in July 2020. 26 proposals were selected.
Artists were invited to send Instructions for artworks, that anyone could follow. Each set of instructions, with text, images, video, sketches, became a work in itself.

Through this open call, Sandwich was looking for artists that are at ease with opening up their creative process to others, that can visualize works way before they start to exist, and that are comfortable with letting go of their idea in the hands of a stranger. Double Decker questions the need for (over)production in art and provokes a transfer of ideas from author to producer. In this process, what happens to authorship and how much of the original concept is left intact afterwards? We hope that the complete collection of instructions will become a resource not just for artists, but for anyone that enjoys an insight into the creative process.

A cultural project co-funded by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund. The project does not necessarily represent the position of the Administration of the National Cultural Fund. The AFCN is not responsible for the content of the project or the manner in which the results of the project may be used. These are entirely the responsibility of the funding recipient.

Celebrating the creativity, stories and experiences of the community during lockdown
An exhibition celebrating the creativity, stories and experiences of our visitors and local community during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Every fortnight during the countrywide lockdown we released a new theme to inspire our audiences with ideas of art they could create. These themes were based on the 6 ways to wellbeing; Be Kind (in partnership with People United), Be connected, Be Mindful, Be active, Be green and Be inspired. We encouraged participants to be as imaginative as possible.
The responses varied in mediums – from paintings, drawings and photographs, to textile, prints and more. The collective result is an inspiring snapshot into the lives of ordinary people during an extraordinary period in history.
Location: Special Exhibition Gallery (Closed Mondays)

  • Sun 27 September 2020 to Sun 18 October 2020
  •  All day
  • Admission free, donatitions encouraged
  •  The Beaney, 18 High Street, Canterbury, CT1 2RA

This Art Open-call received more than 280 artworks that submitted to Children, Youth and Open Division, and 26 artworks were chosen to be showcased in this response show.
