I was wondering how important a telephone booth means in a crowded city nowadays. Mobile phone penetration has passed 100 percent in Hong Kong (110.8%) suggests that the number of cell phone subscriptions has exceeded the size of the population. Apart from providing a space for Superman to change his suits, what a telephone booth can perform is really questionable.
Ironically, when compare to the super well-developed network (cell phone, WIFI, net book etc), these days you are almost impossible to find one single silent space whenever you hang around in the streets: there is no park, rare seats available that can let you have a moment of quiet. For sure you can go to a café and take a rest, but shouldn’t a quiet environment be free-of-charge?
Thus an idea of “silent zone” is developed by transforming a telephone booth into a little quiet space for people to “take a break”. Acoustic foam insulation has been installed in the gap of the telephone booth for increasing the sound-proof effect.
Maybe in this information-booming era, what we need is not a superman, not WIFI everywhere, but just a moment of silent.
